Luffewyke

Early-attested site in the Parish of Manton

Historical Forms

  • Luffewyke maner 1401 Cl
  • Luffwick 1325 VCH
  • Luffwyk 1330 ib

Etymology

LUFFEWYKE (lost). In 1401 Cl, the manor of Manton is called Luffewyke maner 1401 Cl. Recorded for Manton also are Luffwick 1325 VCH (p) and Luffwyk 1330 ib (p). It is uncertain whether the manor simply takes its name from a Luffwyk family or whether both the name of the family and the name of the manor represent an otherwise unrecorded farmstead in Manton. If the latter is the case, we have 'Luffa's dairy farm', v. wīc The relationship of such a site to nearby (North) Luffenham, 'Luffa's village', would then be significant and Luffewyke as a settlement name may thus predate Manton.
