Etymology

This name must be a hybrid compound of OE  wielle and ON  bekkr. The reference is to the stream which rises at Creswell (Db) and, before the formation of the artificial lake, joined the Poulter above Norton. Cf. rivulus qui dicitur Wellebec t. Hy 2 (1327) Ch, rivulum qui dicitur Wellebek 1245FF , Wilebek-water , Wilebek streme c. 1540 L.
