Roy's Bridge Lane

Early-attested site in the Parish of Rufford

Roy's Bridge Lane (6″). Cf. Rise Bridge 1637Map , Royce Bridge c. 1825 O.S. This is another example of a compound of OE  hris, 'brushwood' and bridge , as first noted under Risenbridge (PN Wo 22) and later discussed under Rice Bridge (PN Sx 258), Rising Bridge (PN Nth 166), Ridgebridge (PN Sr 255), Risebridge (PN Ess 119). It probably denotes a brushwood causeway over marshy ground.
