Etymology

Knapthorpe is Chenapetorp , Chenatorp 1086 DB, Knapetorp t. Ric 1 (1308) Ch, 1235, 1242 Fees, Knapethorp 1305Ass , Cnapethorp 1258FF , Knaptorp 1275 RH, Knapthorp 1310 Ch, 1322 Ipm, Cnapthorp 1312Ass . The first element is OE  cnapa , 'boy,' used probably as a personal name, or the cognate ON  Knapi . Cf. Knaptoft (Lei), Cnapetot DB, Cnapetoft 1209–35 as quoted in DEPN, and Knapton (PN ERY 136).
