Etymology

Wainscarre (lost) is venella de Waynestarthe , Waynestart 13thBlyth , molendinum de Wayneschard , Waynescart 1274 ib., Waynestarth 1302 ib., Waynster 1552 Pat, Wainscarre Milles 1601 DKR xxxviii. 'scarth or gap through which a wain or waggon can make its way,' v. skarð . Professor Tait notes that Wainscarth (1242 Furness) is the old name for Hardknott Pass (Cu).
