Etymology

Nornay is Northene , Northenhee 13thBlyth , Northenaye c. 1280 ib., Noryeneye 1295 ib., Norney 1384 Cl, 1513FF , Northney 1598Depositions . This is OE  norðan ēa , 'north of the water,' the hamlet being situated to the north of Blyth on the other side of the river Ryton. Cf. Norney (PN Sr 199).
