Etymology

Professor Ekwall and Dr Smith agree in suggesting an original compound of OE  tǣnel , 'basket,' and holt, hence, '(osier) holt in which baskets are made.' For metathesis of nl to ln , cf. Onley and Olney supra 14, 44 and Binley (PN Wa 25) DB Bilner .Herne is OE  hyrne. The place lies in the S.E. corner of the parish.
