Etymology

Dr Ritter suggests that we may here have to do with a pers. name Singulf which might perhaps best be explained as a Scand loan-name from OGer. Cf. Singulph (Förstemann, PN 1338), and for early loss of f in this Scand name cf. Rygh, GP 217, s. n. Singull , Singulf . Hence 'Singull 's wood,' v. holt .
