Etymology

Fryant Fm is Freryn Court 1515–18 ECP, Freren al. Kyngesbury 1544 LP, Friarn Manor 1593 N, Friant 1754 R. 'Friars' court or manor.' According to Lysons (iii, 233) the manor belonged to the Priory of St John of Jerusalem, so the freren or brethren were the knights.
