Etymology

This name repeats itself in the old name for the site of Temple Mills infra 107. It is a compound of the common word hedge (ME  hegge ) and ME  cracche , crecche . This last word (v. NED s. v. cratch sb.) is used of a 'hurdle' or 'wooden grating,' and cracche-hegge is perhaps descriptive of a hedge or enclosure made of hurdles. The later forms show the same development of inorganic s which is noted in PN Sx 190, s. n. Poles Pitch, and PN Ess 180, s. n. Scaldhurst.
