Ponders End

Early-attested site in the Parish of Enfield

Historical Forms

  • Ponders ende 1593 N
  • Enefeld 1373 Pat

Etymology

Ponders End is Ponders ende 1593 N, probably so called because it is the end or quarter of the parish (v. ende) of Enfield where lived John Ponder of Enefeld (1373 Pat). It is possible that an earlier member of this family was Luc' de la ponde , who is mentioned c. 1200 (CottCh ) as a former holder of land in Edmonton. Ponders End is on the Enfield border of Edmonton. For such er -formation cf. PN Sx 35, s. n. Bridger's Pond.
