Etymology

Chiswick Ait is Ye Twigg Eight 1650 Feret, 1741–5 R, Chiswick Ait 1819 G. This is ME  eyte , ayte , OE  iggoð, 'islet.' Cf. Eel Pie Island supra 30 and Neat infra 170. The original first element is presumably the common word twig .
