Etymology

Sutton is Suthtona , Sutthona 1181 StPaulsDB, Suttone 1222 FF, Sutton Chesewyk 1367 FF, Sutton by Chesewyk 1437 Pat, Sutton al. Bewregarde 1456 Pat, Sutton al. Beauregard 1457 ib., Sutton Court 1597 PCC. 'South farm,' v. tun , probably with reference to Acton to the north. The manor house of Sutton Court is now demolished. The French epithet appears only in the above Patent Roll records. It seems to mean 'fine view or prospect.'In early times there would have been a view from the manor house over the river towards the distant Surrey hills.
