Etymology

'Hrók's farmstead, village', from the ON  pers.n. Hrókr and , identical with Roxby House PN YN 225. The modern name is derived from the strong form of the pers.n., Hrókr ; those without medial -es - are presumably from the weak form Hróki . In accordance with early AN usage OE and ON  clk is represented by -ch - before -e -. Forms in -beria are also recorded for Scawby and Tealby in the same documents as for Roxby. They are not however supported by similar spellings elsewhere and are no doubt to be regarded as “sports”.
