Etymology

Holmshill is le Holmes 1361Ct , Holmes 1387 Cl, Holmeswent 1436, Holmesgrounde 1485Cassio and was the home of John de Holmes (1307SR ) and John atte Holmes (1345FF ). This is the dialect holme , 'marshy land' etc., ultimately from ON  holmr, 'island, well-watered land,' The original holme may have been the flat land below the present Holmshill, where there is a small stream. Went is ME  went , 'path, way.'
