Etymology

Revelend Fm is Rutherfield 1517, Retherfeldwyk 1526, Rotherfield End 1537, Rytherfield End 1607, Hauncheley al. the Revell 1609, Rotherfield al. Revell End 1614, Revell End al. Rotherfield End 1646, Revill Wicke 1617 Verulam and was the home of Adam de Rutherfeld (1307SR ). 'Cattle open space,' v. feld .The name is identical in origin with Rotherfield (PN Sx 376).The modern name is said to be due to the holding of revels in this part of the parish at certain festivals but it may be a reductive of earlier Retherveld .
