Etymology

'North enclosure or enclosed wood,' v. haga . All this area was part of the dense forest on the Middlesex border and is still well wooded. North in distinction from a lost Suthag wood t. Ric 1 (1301) Ch, Southawe 1432 Wills, in East Barnet to the south.
