Etymology

Waltham Cross is Waltham Crouche 1360 Pat, 1376Ass , Walthamcros 1365 ib., Walthamcrosse 1424 Cl, Walthamcrouche 1434 ib., Waltham Crosstreete 1538LRMB , Walton Cross 1609 Sess, marsh called Waltham Cross Hoppet 1660 ib. This village grew up round the cross set up to mark the resting-place of the body of Queen Eleanor, wife of Edward I, on its journey from Harby (Nt) to London. It is so called from Waltham (Essex) one mile to the east. It was the last but one (Charing Cross) of the twelve crosses (v. crouche ) set up by the king at every place where the body rested for the night. For hoppet , v. infra 256.
