Elbrook Ho

Early-attested site in the Parish of Ashwell

Historical Forms

  • Hilbecke 1549 Pat
  • Helbecke brydge 1551 ib
  • Helbeck lane 1594 Sess

Etymology

Elbrook Ho may be identical with Hilbecke 1549 Pat, Helbecke brydge 1551 ib., Helbeck lane 1594 Sess. If this is so, we have a surprising compound of OE  hyll, 'hill,' and the Scandinavian bekkr , 'brook,' the reference being to the river Rhee which rises near by. The whole history is very doubtful.
