Etymology

'Western fortification', v. west , burh , and R. Trym (i, 13supra ).The reason for 'west' is not clear as it is south-east of Henbury, but the site was 1½ miles west of the Roman road from Gloucester to Bristol. There was a monastery here in the 9th century, which accounts for the variant West mynster in BCS 313 (v. mynster 'monastery').
