Etymology

Idel Barrow, Idelberge 1121 Glouc, p. 1412 GloucHist, Idelbrege p. 1412 ib, Hilldeberg '1248Ass . 'The empty barrow', v. īdel , beorg , doubtless one which had been opened for treasure. Apparently the barrow no longer exists, but it is marked on the maps at the meeting point of the parishes of Upton, Cranham and Painswick.
