Etymology

'Sheep farm', v. scēap , tūn . The normal ME  form would be Shep -, but Ship - and Shup - in this and names like Shipton Oliffe or Shipton Solers (180, 181infra ) are from a late WSax  scȳp , scī (e )p , which is probably an i -mutated form of scēap (cf. EPN ii, 100–1). The manor was held by the family of Moygne from the 13th century (Radulfus le Moine 1221 Eyre 19, Will' le Moyne 1248Ass 4d, 1295 Ipm, 1303, 1316 FA ii, 248, 272, etc.).
