Etymology

Shipton Dovel, S (c )hepton Douffeld 1541 FF, S (c )hepton Dowfyld 1570 Will, Shipton Dovel (l )1576, 1587FF , Shipton Doffeld 1579 ib, Shipton Dowell 1667 Will, Shipton Dovell als. Shipton Estcourte 1637FF . v. prec.Dovel , which is apparently a feudal affix, has not been traced; it may be from a local p.n. Dowfield , named from the family of William de Ou (DB) or Dow in FA (Nomina Villarum ). The Estcourt family had an estate here from the 15th century (cf. Estcourt infra ).
