Etymology

Hailey Fm & Hailey Wood, Haile , Haylegh 1327SR (p), Haley 1623FF , Hayley 1794GR 892. 'Clearing used for hay', v. hēg , lēah , but there is nearly always some ambiguity in the first el. in such names between 'hay' and (ge)hæg 'hunting enclosure'. Hailey Wood is a very extensive continuation of the great Oakley Wood in Cirencester (64supra ).
