Etymology

'Farmstead on the R. Frome', v. Frome (1) (7supra ), tūn , distinguished as 'Mansell' from Frampton on Severn (ii, 196infra ) on the same river and Frampton Cotterell (iii, 116infra ) on the Bristol Frome, because it was held in the 13th and 14th centuries by the Maunsel family (John Mansell 1285 FA ii, 236, William Mauncell 1303 ib ii, 251). On the variation between Fram - and From - cf. Frampton on Severn (ii, 196infra ), Phonol. § 6.
