Etymology

Rodmarton, Didmarton, and Tormarton (iii, 28, 56 infra ) are all on the Wiltshire border and it is probable that the second el. in each case is OE  mǣr -tūn 'farmstead on the boundary' (v. (ge)mǣre, tūn ), a well-evidenced p.n. The first el. of Rodmarton is, as the variation between Red - and Rod - shows, OE  hrēod 'reed'.
