Etymology

'Hūnlāf's hide of land', v. hīd . The pers.n. is OE  Hūnlāf . Ekwall's derivation from OE  hȳð 'landing-place' is not possible on topographical grounds; the place is on high ground (500 ft) at the north end of Tarlton and there is no river in the vicinity.
