Etymology

Matson Hill, Top of Knoll, Mattesknoll (e )1260–70GlCh iii, 8, 1438, 1624 GlR, Mattesknoll als. Mattestone hill 1556 ib, Matisnoll 1354 ib, the bekyn at Matsons Hyll 1559 GlCorp, v. cnoll 'hill'. The first el. is as in Matson (supra ). The site of the beacon still remains; in 1559 money was paid for a pitch-barrel for it (GlCorp 468).
