Etymology

Mudgedown, Modelesdon 1322Ext 24(p), Moddesdone 1327SR (p), Mudgedown 1777 M. 'Mōdwulf's hill', from the rare OE  pers.n. Mōdwulf or possibly an OE  Mōdel , an -el derivative of an OE  Mōd , a hypocoristic form of names like Mōdwulf (cf. OE Mōding ). On the modern form cf. Phonol. § 44 (b ).
