Etymology

Stoke (lost), in Suthstoce 972 (10th) BCS 1282, Hawkesburie als. Stoke Hawkesburie 1599 FF, Stoke 1610 ib, 1625 Inq. v. stoc 'an outlying farm, a secondary settlement'. The site has not been determined (cf. Finb 120), except that it was a tithing of Hawkesbury (1625 Inq). In OE  form Suth - 'south' to distinguish it from Severn Stoke (Wo 227) mentioned in the same document.
