Etymology

Ayleford (partly in Awre), Herley (e )ford (e )c. 1270, c. 1275For , Erley (e )forde 1282 ib, 1355 Heref, Arleford c. 1340 ib, Arleyford 1445BledCt , Eyllesford 1360 Ipm (p), Oileyford 1777 M. The first el. is possibly an older p.n. 'eagle clearing' (v. earn , lēah ), with ford , here a ford across Forge Brook.
