Etymology

Oridge Street, on hagann rycg , of hægen hricge 11 (14) Finb 187, Tereige 1086 DB, Hagherugg '1227FF , Haurug '1221 Eyre (p), Haurigge 1299 Pat, Haw (e )regg '1248Ass , Haw (e )rigg '1287 ib, Haw (e )rugg '1320 ib, Haw (e )ryge 1546 LP, Haw (e )ridge als. Horridge 1624FF , Horwiche 1618 ib, Harridge or Harwich Street 1830 M. v. haga 'enclosure', hrycg 'ridge' and strǣt (cf. i, 21supra ). The second OE spelling has substituted OE  *hægen 'enclosure', which is not otherwise recorded till ME; the DB form has initial t - from a wrong analysis of OE  æt 'at' and the p.n. (Phonol. § 45).
