Etymology

'Hill-wood,' v. beorg , holt , and cf. beorh holt BCS 596. The manor was in the possession of the Sackville family, t. Hy 1 to 1559 (M ii, 229). West to distinguish it from East Bergholt (Sf).For the initial v , w cf. Bobbingworth supra 52.
