Etymology

Killegrews olim Shenvills is Shenfeldes 1497 IpmR, Shenfeld 1542 LP, Shenvil (l )s , Shenvil (l )s Farm 1743 ER xxx, 1777 C, 1805 O, Killegrews 1806 ER xxx. Originally a manorial name representing the messuage held by William de Shenefeld in 1279 (FF), from Shenfield supra 169. The earliest reference to the modern name is Mr Killegrew 's gate (1735 ER xxx). See also EAS xvi, 95 ff.
