'From its stony or gravelly situation' (M ii, 252). “In the old court-rolls it is styled the Hamlet of Stansted; was taxed by itself to the poor; and had a constable for that leet; and so it continued, till of late it was united to the rest of the parish of Halsted” (ib.).
