Etymology

Ashford Lodge is terra quondam Thome Assheford 1446 EA (NS) v, Asschfordes 1576Ct , Ashwood 1768 M, Ashfords 1777 C. This is a manorial name, but whether it should really be Ashfords or Ashwoods is not clear. Families of these names were connected with the neighbourhood in the 13th century. Peter de Afford , Asseford is mentioned in 1235 (Ass ) and Saer, William and Walter de Ayshford , Ass (h )eford , Asseford had land here (1248 FF, Ass , 1285 ib., 1339FF ), whilst Gilbert de As(se)w (o )d (e ), Eyswode had land here in 1240 and was keeper of the manor of Stansted (infra 436) in 1264 (1240 FF, 1248Ass , 1264 Misc).
