Etymology

Lindsey Street, Lynceley Grange (6″) is Lincedeheie 1200 P, Lyndesey 1337FF , Lyndseystret (e )1381-1423Ct , Lynsey (e )stret (e )1385–1413Ct , Linceley Gate , Merles 1641 Fisher, Linset Street 1768 M, 1777 C, 1805 O. Probably OE  hlinc-heafod (-ge )hæg , 'enclosure on the top of the hill,' with early reduction of hlincheafod to linc (h )ed , cf. Broxted infra 471 and v. hlinc , heafod , (ge)hæg. Later we have AN s for c and t for d . For Merles , v. Marles Fm infra 24.
