Etymology

Coopersale Street, Coopersale Common, Coopersale hall (Theydon Garnon) is Cobers (h )ale c. 1400, 1474 EAS (NS) v, Coupereshale 1452 Winstone, Cowpersale 1546 ib., Cooper Sale or Thaydon Gardens 1584 Kennedy, Theydon Garnons al. Cowpersale 1559FF , Coopersale alias Gernons 1612 EssVis. It may be that this name should be associated with Cuppershawe , Kapierishawe (1381Ct ). The forms are too late for any satisfactory suggestion to be made as to the etymology. Coopersale was made an ecclesiastical parish in 1852 out of Theydon Garnon. For civil purposes it is now chiefly in Epping.
