Etymology

Merrielands olim Cockermouth Fm (6″) is Co (c )kermouth 1452 Shawcross, t. Eliz ChancP, Cockermore 1616 Shawcross.Originally a manorial name from the family of John de Cokermuth (1321FF ), which must have come from Cockermouth (Cu).It was owned by Rowland Stephenson, 'the Fugitive Banker,' in 1823; he went bankrupt and fled to America. The farm was sold and re-named America Fm , and this was changed to Merrielands by W. Varco Williams c. 1890–6 (Shawcross).
