Etymology

It is difficult to come to any satisfactory solution of this name.We may have as first element an Anglo-Scandinavian pers. name Mel -, Mjǫlþegn 'meal-man,' equivalent in meaning to OScand  mjǫlkarl 'one who deals in meal' and paralleled in form by such names as Farþegn , Herþegn , etc.
