Etymology
'Middle village or estate', OE middel + tūn. Probably the middle settlement between Darlington and Egglescliffe. From the earliest records Middleton was held in two moieties of a knight's fee, Nether Middleton or Middleton St George and Over Middleton or Middleton One Row.
