Etymology

The addition Over 'upper' (v. uferra ), is for distinction of this moiety from that of Nether Middleton and refers to its position further up the R. Tees. It was subsequently replaced by 'one Row' referring to the village as consisting of a single row of tofts, a type of village layout characteristic of the R. Tees.
