Etymology

'Thurstan's estate', Anglo-Scand  pers.n. Thurstan (ON  Þorsteinn SPNLY 313–7, SPNN 425–9) + tūn. ON  Þorsteinn is one of the most frequent Scand pers.ns. in English records, commonly appearing as here in the Anglicised form T (h )urstan in which OScand  -stæinn , -steinn is replaced by the corresponding OE  -stan . The p.n. has undergone metathesis (ur > ru ), raising of u to i (possibly due to the falling together of ur and ir before metathesis), suffix confusion (stan > sting ) and consonant substitution (l for t ).
