Etymology

'Crane ford, ford frequented by cranes or herons', OE  corn, genitive pl. corna , + ford . Identical with Cranford Devon SS 3421, Cranford 1275 and SS 5420, Cranford 1286 PND 82, 120, Middlesex TQ 1076, Cranford 1086 etc. PNMx 32, and Northamptonshire SP 9277, Craneford 1086 etc. PNNp 180. The metathesised form corn for cran 'a crane', the usual form, is found apart from here in Cornwall, Cumberland, Devon, Lancashire, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
