Etymology

'The middle estate, the middle manor' of the bishop of Durham, midway between his castles at Durham and Stockton, OE  middel + hām.The 1438×9 Bisshopton ' Medilton ' form is odd and together with the 1717 Bishopp Middleton sp might suggest confusion of the name with Middleton St George.
