Etymology

'Farm by the hillock', from cnoll (v. prec.) and tūn (once replaced by or confused with dūn 'hill'). The DB spellings, and the 13th cent, spellings in Cnou -, Gnol -, Chinou -, show AN influence, cf. Church Knowle 187, v. ANInfl 49, 137, 146. This place gave name to the hundred, v. supra .
