Etymology

Bagman's Copse (SU 032091) & Bagman's Lane, Bagman's Fm(1″, called Smithy 6″), Bagerham (probably for Bagenham ) 1237, 1242 Ch, Baggeham (a wood) 1305 Ipm, bosco domini apud Bagenham 1435Midd , copse called Baggnam , Baggenamcopse 1551ib , Gt Bagenham Coppice & Lt Bagenham Coppice , Bagenham Grd 1840TA . This name has the same first el. as Baggeridge (prec.), medial -n - no doubt reflecting an OE  gen.sg. form in -an . The second el. is probably hamm 'enclosure'. For the late change Bagnam > Bagman , cf. dial. vemon for venom and the forms for the f.n. Newnham's 1127.
