Etymology

'Philip's manor', a post-Conquest name in tūn like Forston 1340, v. IPN 131; possibly named from the Philip de Winburne mentioned in 1166 RBE (239) in connection with the abbey of Wilton, which held this manor in 1086 DB and 1235–6 Fees. The pers.n. occurs frequently in ME  as Phelip beside Philip , and the contracted forms Phelp , Philp occur as surnames, v. Reaney s.n.Philip . For the identification of the DB form Winburne , v. Eyton 119–20, VCHDo 383. The site of this lost manor, on the E bank of R. Allen (formerly the Wimborne ) S of St Giles Ho, is located by Taylor, DoNHAS 88 210–211.There is reference to a mill here in 1086 DB (VCHDo 383), to a church in 1510MP , and there was also a medieval deer-park, v. Park Copse infra .
