Etymology

Ferne (lost), Ferne 1244Ass (p), 1280ib (p), 1296 FF (p), Ferne juxta Upwinborne 1358 Hutch3, 1401, 1403Midd , 1431 Fine, 1434 Pat, 1441 Cl, via regia usque Fernwod '1401Midd , possibly from fergen , fiergen 'wooded hill', but more probably from fearn 'fern' in a collective sense 'ferny place', cf. Fern Down in Hampreston par. supra .
