Etymology

The Minster (SZ 009999), 'the church of Winburne '1189–99 France, ecclesiam de Wymburneminstr '1244Ass et freq , capelle regis de Winburn '1246 Cl et freq , scalarium cymiterii beate cuhtburge virginis l13Wim , ecclesia Sancte Cithburge (sic)virginis 1306ib , ecclesia Sancte Cudburge virginis 1313ib et freq with variant spellings ecclesia Sancte C (h )ut (h )burge virginis , 'king 's free chapel of St Cuthburga in Wymb (o )urne Min (i )stre '1328 Cl, 1440 Pat et freq , chirch of Saynt Cutborrowgh 15Wim , libere capelle regis sive ecclesie collegiate de Wymborn Minster 1511 Hutch3, The Collegiate Church 1869 Map, perhaps on the site of the AS nunnery founded by Queen Cūðburh (v. par. name supra ) and of ecclesiam de Winburne 1086 DB (VCHDo 370), cf. also the chapel (ecclesiola ) in Wimborne belonging to the abbey of Horton at the same date (ib 381). In the Minster is the Lady Chapel ('the chapel of St Mary' 1495 WimCW, owre lady chappell 1506 ib), and the Great or Brembre's Chantry (magne Cantar '…voc ' Brenbrischauntry 1577AD ) founded by dean Thomas de Brembre 1351HarlRoll , v. chantry , VCHDo 2 110, and the lost st.n. le Chauntrey strete supra . The Minster gives name to le Churchestile 1483Wim , Cherchstyle 1495 WimCW ('the house at-', on E side of church, v. stigel ), cf. also the howse att the chyrche end 1504 WimCW, the chyrche yarde 1506 ib, church lytten walls 1590 ib (v. līc-tūn).
